NSS: Brief Introduction

The National Service Scheme (NSS)was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the father of the nation. Hence the idea of involving students in the task of national service dates back to the times of Mahatma Gandhi who tried to impress upon his student audience that they should always keep before them their supreme responsibility. The first duty of the students should be to prepare themselves for final dedication to the service of the community. It (Scheme) is also essential for the overall development of the personality of the students.

"NSS provides students with opportunities for serving the Community, Nation and Society. It also provides them with an opportunity to interact with people around the campus creatively and constructively and to put their educations to concrete social use. Hence all should come forward in the field of social work/service and serve the nation with dedication and honesty."

NSS DAY

24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes and activities. "National Service Scheme (NSS) is a main ‘out of the classroom’ student-centric activity where teachers provide only guidance and act as coordinators while the students are the main actors. Students contribute through service to the community and conservation of the physical environment. It also inculcates in students a sense of leadership and teamwork enabling them to identify and resolve community issues. Hence leadership, collectivism, social responsibility, activism and community participation are at work at the same time. All these attributes are what make a student a complete citizen. This activity also brings them close to the social and environmental realities. In view of the importance of NSS in nation-building our endeavour is to strengthen NSS by increasing participation of students through widening the scope and increasing the number of events organised by us.

KINDS OF ACTIVITIES/PROGRAMME

There are two types of activities/programmes under the NSS, these are as follows:- Regular NSS activities under which students undertake various activities in the adopted villages, college campus and urban Shimla during the working hours or after college hours and Special camping activities /programmes under which 7 days duration camps are organized in adopted village or urban slums.

Latest activities

The National Service Scheme (NSS) has remained steadfast in its commitment to fostering social responsibility, community engagement, and holistic development among our students. The session of 2023-24 witnessed a plethora of impactful activities that not only contributed to the betterment of society but also enriched the lives of our volunteers.

Blood Donation aimed to address the constant need for blood in medical emergencies and surgeries in nearby hospital IGMC. We successfully mobilized both students to donate blood, ultimately saving numerous lives in the process. Volunteers actively participated in activities such as litter picking, waste segregation, and beautification of public spaces. These initiatives not only enhanced the aesthetic appeal of the surroundings but also instilled a sense of civic responsibility among the participants. NSS organized several initiatives focused on promoting sustainable practices and conservation efforts. Tree plantation drives, awareness campaigns on renewable energy sources to educate the community about the importance of preserving the environment for future generations. Some NSS volunteers conducted tuition classes, providing educational materials economically disadvantaged students. By empowering these individuals with education, we aimed to break the cycle of poverty and pave the way for a brighter future. Throughout the session, NSS actively engaged with the local community through cultural events, festivals, and celebrations. These events served as platforms for promoting unity, diversity, and cultural exchange among people from different backgrounds. Additionally, NSS collaborated with local NGOs and government agencies to address community-specific issues and implement sustainable solutions.
